Contentious Institutionalization of Protests under Democracy: The Evidence from Taiwan, 1986–2016

Abstract While many scholarly works are concerned with how social protests promote democratization, this article addresses the causally reverse question: democratization shapes landscape of street protests. We use a unique database 31 years protest events in Taiwan, smooth and successful case authoritarianism-to-democracy transition, to engage dialogue political transition theory, institutionalization thesis networked movement theory. The logistic regression analysis indicates that violence persists under consolidated democracy, but it is marginalized. find an indirect effect from growth organizations foster adaptation festive performative tactics, which less confrontational nature.
